POSSIBLE 13-DAY ITINERARY OF LITHUANIA - CULTURE & NATURE

View Lithuania. Culture & Nature in a larger map

Day 1: … / VILNIUS
Arrival in Vilnius. Pick-up your car and drive to your hotel in a city center (5-7 km), free time, overnight in Vilnius.

Day 2: VILNIUS
Walk in the Old Town of Vilnius in the morning hours. You may also decide to visit the KGB Museum, which is on the main avenue and a walking distance from the old town. The afternoon may be dedicated to neighourhoods of Uzupis (the republic of the artists), Zverynas (wooden architecture), Antakalnis (Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Antakalnis Cemetery).

Day 3: VILNIUS / KERNAVE / VILNIUS (80km)
We would recommend some hiking today. The Regional Park of Vilnia River is just 7 km out of town and is a perfect place to hike for an hour or two. Then drive to Kernave, a small village, but a big World Heritage listed archeological site 40 km from Vilnius – picturesque views for another round of hiking or a picnic. A modern Museum of Archeology is also worth a visit there.

Day 4: VILNIUS / TRAKAI / KAUNAS (110km)
Drive to Trakai, the ancient capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Every single person passing this place would admire the red-brick gothic castle in the middle of the lakes, which nowadays hosts a History Museum. Choose to walk along the banks of the lakes or sail a yacht, or row a boat. Then taste a kybyn – a pastry stuffed with lamb, which is a traditional meal of the local minority of the Karaims. Later just before reaching Kaunas stop at an open-air museum presenting the rural Lithuania in miniature (it takes 2-3 hours to visit the museum).

Day 5: KAUNAS
Unlike cosmopolitan Vilnius, Kaunas, the second biggest city of the country is a city with strong national identity. Main attractions in Kaunas: its little old town, overlooking the confluence of two rivers; the pedestrian Freedom Avenue with its architecture of the early 20th century and full of little shops and cafes; the Museum of M. K. Ciurlionis, one of the greatest artists and composers of Lithuania; Museum of Devils; Pazailis Monastery ensemble – a real baroque masterpiece of the 17th century on the outskirts of Kaunas (we recommend to schedule your lunch there).

Day 6: KAUNAS / KLAIPEDA / CURONIAN SPIT (210-260km)
Drive to Klaipeda. Take the A1 highway as there’s a long day ahead today. Founded by Germans in the 13th century Klaipeda is now the third city of Lithuania and the only seaport of the country. For ages it used to be easternmost town of Prussia. You will still notice the influence of Germanic architecture in the city. Unfortunatelly heavy bombing during the World War 2 left little to admire nowadays (visit a Clock Museum if you are with kids). But here you are to get a ferry to the Curonian Spit over the lagoon (ferry and ecology fees to be paid on spot and are not significant). The entire peninsula is World Heritage listed and you will find your own reasons for that. Almost not any agricultural or industrial activities are undertaken on the spit. The magnificant landscapes which still host four remaing fishermen villages of diferrent sizes. The main two are Nida and Juodkrante, now the resorts famous for cozy strolls or cycling along the seashore. In Juodkrante you have a great hiking opportunity on the Hill of Witches, which is a nice up-and-down walk in a forest park full of traditional wooden sculpures, representing the heroes of Lithuanian myths and legends. In Nida walk to the huge sand dunes or take a boat to observe them from the water, pay a visit to the amber gallery with an amazing collection of amber and highest quality amber articles are on sale. Freshly caught smoked fish may be tasted in any village, so do not miss this opportunity.

Day 7: CURONIAN SPIT
The spit is just 50 km long, so you may craft your day here depending on your mood and interests.

Day 8: CURONIAN SPIT / DRUSKININKAI (345km)
Take a ferry back to Klaipeda (no new ticket is needed) and take a a so called Castle Route for a picturesque journey along the river Nemunas to Druskininkai. This is a spa resort well know for its natural mineral water, even the name of the town mean "a salt city". Depending on your fellow travelers choose a massage, mud application, a mineral water bath or justa walk in a beautiful pine forest, cycling, water park pleasures, high ropes adventures.

Day 9: DRUSKININKAI
Another day at the resort. Spend some time in a nearby Grutas Park - an open-air museum which started its life by exposing the soviet monuments and sculptures and later grew into a big theme park of the era. This could give you an idea of the life beyond the curtain.

Day 10: DRUSKININKAI / VILNIUS (130km)
It is only 130 km from Druskininkai to Vilnius and takes some 1,5 hours driving. But we would recommend you go off the highway to take advantage of the greenest area of the country, walk or picnic in the woods, stop in traditional villages like Zervynos and Marcinkonys. Later drive to Vilnius for the overnight.

Day 11: VILNIUS / NATIONAL PARK OF AUKSTAITIJA (120 km)
From Vilnius there’s another ~120 km to Teh National Park of Aukstaitija and it takes up to 2 hours to drive. Come here for a peace of mind before you go home. The National Park is usually referred to as a Lakeland. You may row a boat, canoe, swim or simply sunbathe at a lake. Rent bikes to cycle in the park next day. Visit the local villages, The Beekeeping Museum.

Day 12: NATIONAL PARK OF AUKSTAITIJA
Another day in the beatiful nature.

Day 13: NATIONAL  PARK OF AUKSTAITIJA / VILNIUS / …
Estimate a couple of hours to drive to Vilnius Airport, drop-off the car here and off you go. It’s been a real rest, ah!
