Day 1. ... - RIGA

Arrival in Riga. Pick-up your rental car, drive to the hotel (12 km), free time, overnight in Riga.

Day 2. RIGA
Our recommendation is to explore the city centre and then pop into the Old Town to stroll the narrow cobblestone streets. The roofs and towers of churches is the dominant silhouette of Riga. Winding streets with tightly built small-scale buildings, the number of little squares with diferrent vertical profiles leaves the feeling of a spacious town. We recommend a nice panoramic view from the Tower of The St. Peters’ Church to better understand the city plan and the importance of the river Daugava. Riga is also world famous for its Art Nouveau quarter, so make sure not to miss that.

Day 3. RIGA / JURMALA / KOLKA
Follow the western coast of Riga Bay today. Leave the city in the morning. First mandatory stop is Jurmala, Latvia’s biggest and the most trendy resort town, which is worth visiting not only because of the presence of sandy seashore with a pine forest alongside, but also because of its well preserved traditional wooden architecture, a nice park for kids, fish restaurants and maybe even a waterpark. Later cross the National Park of Kemeri with the Great Kemeri Bog and several lakes. Explore some little fishermen villages like Engure, Mesrags, Roja until you reach Kolka. The villages are the last bastions of a Finno-Ugric people of Livs (Livonians). Arrive in the northenmost village of of teh seashore, Kolka. Walk to the Horn of Kolka where the Baltic waves from the east and west meet. From this spot you are able to watch the sun rising from the sea in the morning and sinking into the sea on sunset (stay here for a night to witness this unique experience). Diferrent spieces of birds migrate over this area each year which is also interesting to watch.

Day 4. KOLKA/ VENTSPILS
Spend some time in Slitere National Park, visit there an open-air museum of geological history of the Baltic Sea. Then move to Ventspils, an old town, but very dynamic and very carefully renewed and well known for its cobbled streets and … a Cow Avenue. Ventspils has one of the most moder town museums in the Baltics and it is also a largest seaport of Latvia.

Day 5. VENTSPILS / KULDIGA
Head to Kuldiga- yet another charming Latvian town: three markeplaces, old brick bridge and other items recalling the times when Kuldiga was the capital of Courland. The waterfalls on the river Venta are one of the widest in Europe (249 m).

Day 6. KULDIGA / JURKALNE / LIEPAJA
Drive through a historic region of Courland in the direction of Jurkalne. You have a possibility to stop ata castle of Edole, which is still inhabited by the owner family. Choose to walk along the seashore in Jurklane to admire the sandy beaches and beautiful sand cliffs of the Baltic Sea. An impressive monument to Latvian refugees of 1944 is also our recommendation. Later proceed to Liepaja for the overnight.

Day 7. LIEPAJA / JELGAVA / RUNDALE
Liepaja is an old maritime town since the times of Tsarist Russia. It also has an oldest tram in Northern Europe, Craft Museum full of beautiful amber articles. You will eb astonished by a contrast between an impressive Orthodox church of the times of Tsar Nicholas and the soviet-built apartment houses around it. Then you will drive through Latvia’s countryside to Jelgava, where there still stands the former residence of the Duke of Courland, the palace where Louis XVIII of France has spent some years in exile. Later you reach Pilsrundale and get a bed in this small countryside town.

Day 8. RUNDALE / SIGULDA / RIGA
Pilsrundale is really a tiny town, but the palace here is maybe even bigger than the village itself. This is Rundale Palace, the beauty which no doubt is Latvia’s attraction number one and is often specially visited by tourists even having to detour off the highway. Later head to Sigulda and stay soem hours in the Gauja National Park with its wonderful nature and yet another medieval castle or two. Riga is just 50 km southwest from Sigulda so you may reach it for lodging.

Day 9. RIGA - ...
Free time, drive to the airport, drop-off the car.
